I am particularly excited for my RA/AP because this is an issue I’m very passionate about and an issue that needs a lot more awareness as time moves on. As previously stated my RA/AP will deal with prevention of destruction from intensifying hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean but the same principles can be applied in the Pacific for typhoons as well. I will focus on an isolated issue as an example which is the destruction of Puerto Rico from category 5 hurricane in August of 2017. This project will help to connect the civil engineering world to the climate change issue and how environmental and atmospheric scientists can work with civil engineers to prevent damage from intensifying hurricanes. Below is my plan for my RA and AP:
Title: Minimizing the destruction of major hurricanes
Info: This RA will deal with looking at past destruction from major hurricanes (category 4 and up) and a few isolated incidents that will help both civil engineers and environmental scientists figure out a better plan to prevent destruction in the future as climate change continues to be a problem for the globe in the near and distant future.
Goal: The goal of this would be to devise a plan for the future which will minimize destruction of Caribbean Islands and other areas in the path of destruction from major hurricane events. I will look at the geography, landscape, and current engineering techniques used to minimize the destruction of places that have a history of hurricane destruction whether that be to have underground power lines, pipes to direct flood waters, or using stronger material for buildings to prevent the risk of debris in these places.
Conclusion: Devise a better plan for the future in Islands and Land in the path of hurricanes in the Atlantic (and using these principles to apply to these elsewhere).
Timeline: The first goal would be to do some research- this means examining past destruction from hurricanes and finding information on what civil engineers do in these places to prevent destruction and reading scholarly articles about civil and environmental engineering in these locations. Then I will put together a timeline from the article and research information, devise a draft, revise it and then provide a final draft with a solid amount of information.
Extra notes: I will provide a draft of my paper to the writing center before I have a final draft. I will likely create a presentation of all the information and I will use images and data charts to help students understand the idea.
Title: Future Techniques to Prevent Destruction, and Personal Carbon Footprint
Description: I will be interviewing civil engineers (including my father who works for Parsons Corporation in Boston MA) to figure out what techniques they recommend after providing information about the aftermath of the destruction in locations susceptible to hurricanes. I will ask them what the recommend about flood water transport, types of structures that would benefit these locations in the future, what can be done to minimize risk of power loss (underground wires?) and any other additional information they would like to provide. Then I will ask students to submit a survey where they calculate their carbon footprint in order to see how they are influencing climate change as an individual and to help them become more sustainable for the future to help minimize the risks of climate change. It’s important to note that the carbon footprints that we have, contribute to climate change, and one of the things it contributes to is the intensity of hurricanes. I will explain that in a presentation.
Deliverable: I will ask students if they would like to volunteer to share their carbon footprint with me so I can have a few examples for the presentation. I will include background information on the topic and information from the interviews from the civil engineers.
Conclusion: provide information about prevention of destruction of hurricanes and ways to minimize carbon footprints for the future.
Timeline: First I will be doing research information, then the interviews and then the carbon footprint examples that students will provide me with. Then I will put together a power point with all the information and then add additional information for the future to help students become more sustainable. From now until Friday March 23rd I will be conducting research and reading scholarly articles about this topic. From March 19th to March 23rd I will be conducting interviews with civil engineers at Parsons Corporation in Boston. From March 26th to March 30th I will be having students calculate their carbon footprints. And lastly, After April 2nd, I will be putting together the presentation.
Additional Information: I will include photos of the civil engineers (including my father- The Senior Project Manager at Parsons Corporation), photos of destruction from past hurricanes (with Puerto Rico as an example), charts and graphs to enhance understanding and quotes from scholarly articles I have read.
